Search Engines

Things you should know about search engines:

  • Search sites selected by computer not a person
  • Search retrieves large number of results ranked by relevancy
  • Do not search the entire web
  • Not every search engine will retrieve the same results

The library can be a great resource in helping you use the Internet by leading you to the best sources, demonstrating how to search the Internet effectively, and helping you to evaluate the sources you find there.

Some hints for better searching:

  • Search phrases by putting the phrase in quotations
  • No one search engines searches the entire web so it's a good idea to use more than one search engine
  • There is no need to add the word "and" between search terms
