Using Wikipedia for Academic Research

Did you know that you can use Wikipedia when you do academic research? You should not cite Wikipedia as a source not because it is a bad source but because Wikipedia is just an encyclopedia, and college level research requires the use of more sophisticated sources. Here is a list of things you can use it for:

  • Good for background information
  • Use it to create list of phrases, people, organizations, dates, and related terms; you can use these terms to search for information on your topic
  • Look at the References and External links section at the end of the Wikipedia entries for sources you can cite in your research

Take a look at the following video to learn more about using Wikipedia as a research tool.
