For in text citations, the Council of Science Editors follows the name-year system. Cite each reference by giving the author's name followed by the year in which the resource was published. For example: (Williams 2007). Chapter 6 in McMillan's Writing Papers in the Biological Sciences has an excellent description of the name-year system.
The References section of your paper contains only the sources that have been cited (referred to) in the paper. Sources must specifically be mentioned in your paper in order to be included in the References page.
Follow the name-year system for listing your references. Once again, McMillan's book has an excellent section on citation formats in Chapter 6.
