Keywords & Search Tips

Developing good search terms/keywords is critical to finding the resources you need. Once you know your topic, identify words that describe the main concepts of your topic. Then brainstorm alternate or related keywords or synonyms for each concept. These terms will help you locate the resources you need.

Use the advanced search and Boolean AND, OR & NOT to expand or narrow your results. For more search tips, see the guide: Library Research: Developing Search Strategy. Hint: put phrases in quotations!

Here are some sample search combinations for Nursing:

  • medication errors AND (intervention OR prevention)
  • "medication errors" AND hand off
  • medication errors AND intervention AND (teen* OR adolescen* OR juvenile)
